What Car Parts Actually Get Recycled When You Scrap Your Vehicle

Scrapping your car ensures the valuable materials don't end up in landfills

Most people don't realise just how much of their old car can be given a second life. When you finally decide to scrap that vehicle that's been sitting unused, nearly everything gets put to good use somewhere else.

Engine Components

Your engine block contains valuable metals that recyclers are keen to recover.

Whether it's cast iron or aluminium, these components are either refurbished for resale or processed for their metal content.

The same applies to gearboxes, differentials, and other mechanical parts under the bonnet. Even if your engine no longer runs, the materials themselves retain their value.

Wheels and Tyres

Alloy wheels are particularly valuable to recyclers due to their aluminium content.

Standard steel wheels also have recycling value.

Tyres require more complex processing, but they're increasingly being converted into materials for playground surfaces and road construction.

Body Panels and Framework

About two-thirds of your car's weight comes from steel. Every panel, door, and structural component gets processed and turned into new steel products.

Your old Ford Fiesta could end up as part of a new building or even another car somewhere down the line.

Electronic Systems

Modern vehicles contain numerous electronic components that require careful processing.

Wiring harnesses contain copper, while control units and sensors may contain small amounts of precious metals.

These materials are recovered through specialised recycling processes.

Fluids and Filters

Vehicle fluids don't simply get disposed of. Engine oil undergoes cleaning and reprocessing, coolant gets treated for reuse, and other fluids are handled according to environmental regulations.

Oil filters and air filters are also processed, with metal components separated from filter materials.

Interior Components

Leather seats often find new purposes in other products. Plastic dashboard components are increasingly being recycled as processing technology improves.

Fabric seats and carpeting can also be repurposed, though this requires more complex handling.

Catalytic Converters

These emission control devices contain precious metals including platinum, palladium, and rhodium.

Their recovery is an important part of the recycling process due to the value and rarity of these materials.

Glass Components

Windscreens and windows are processed into new glass products.

Safety glass requires special handling due to its laminated construction, but the materials are successfully recovered and reused.

A car with a broken windscreen is parked on the side of the road.

What This Means

When you choose to scrap your car, you're ensuring that valuable materials don't end up in landfills.

A reputable scrap dealer will properly process all the different components, which is why they can offer payment for vehicles that might seem beyond repair.

The automotive recycling industry has developed efficient methods for extracting value from end-of-life vehicles.

Your car's final destination is actually the starting point for numerous new products and materials.
